Grieg: Norwegian dances

Paavo Järvi and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra follow their much-praised Peer Gynt with more quintessentially Norwegian music by Grieg: the richly-scored and colourful Symphonic Dances from 1898, and the earlier Norwegian Dances, originally written for piano duet and orchestrated by Hans Sitt. The famous suite for string orchestra ‘From Holberg’s Time’, written to celebrate the bicentenary of the playwright Ludvig Holberg, is imbued with the eighteenth-century spirit of Rameau and Couperin, while the generous programme includes Grieg’s two haunting and delicate Elegiac Melodies, the second of which, “The Last Spring”, was played at Grieg’s funeral.
